Grain Science Graduate Student Organization (GSGSO)

GSGSO is a campus recognized organization made up of Grain Science Graduate Students. The organization provides opportunities for social interaction and promotes the professional development of our members. It also offers leadership and volunteer opportunities for students. The mission of GSGSO is to “Promote the exchange of knowledge of grain science topics and to act as a mechanism to provide graduate students in the Department of Grain Science and Industry a common voice and promote social activity among members of the organization.”

Several social activities were organized during this past school year. They include monthly meetings, monthly coffee hour, a Halloween party, a Christmas party, an end of year event that included participating in the ropes course at KSU, and parking cars for a football game as a fundraiser. These events have been thoroughly enjoyed by our graduate students.

In addition to social activities, we also provide opportunities to students for professional development. In the years of 2008 and 2009, the first two Grain Science Graduate Student Annual Symposiums were successfully coordinated and run by graduate students. Students were allowed to share their up-to-date research within the department. Also, students were able to practice presentation skills and get feedback from both students and faculty members. Next summer, we will help assist the student division of AACC International in organizing the first ever North American student conference tentatively to be held at K-State.

The GSGSO works to promote the betterment of the Department of Grain Science and Industry to provide a quality education for current and future graduate students. In the last two years, the grad student organization has donated over $2,000 worth of textbooks to the Swanson Resource Room - and this year we plan to donate another eight books to update the catalog. As volunteers, we have helped organize and facilitate open house in the spring and the alumni tailgate at a fall football game. As a final service project, we adopt a family in need at Christmas and donate gifts to them. The Grain Science Graduate Student Organization strives for cooperation between students and the improvement of the Department of Grain Science and Industry in a way that will benefit both graduate students and undergraduates now and in the future.
